“That has to be faster!” 「
”You’ve got to make that very slow.” 「
ROCK CHALLENGE
Happy Halloween!

Summer Beach Event
This past weekend we all had a great time at Miura Beach!!
After Saturday's practice, we had baths and then slept over at the dojo. In the morning we had a healthy breakfast then set out by train to our destination. The kids had a great time playing in the sand and really enjoyed the waves. Our return was a good time to rest as we all had a lot of sun and upon our return to the dojo we sat and relaxed while eating watermelon!

English vs. Japanese #10
One of the differences I have noticed between English and Japanese is the use of the tongue. I believe English uses the tongue in hard quick fashion like boxing. Japanese uses the tongue to flow from sound to sound, softer like tai chi. I know its not a great example but its best I can come up since I have noticed the differences.

English vs. Japanese #8
This section has gradually changed into the differences I have noticed between the two cultures I find myself inbetween.
This week I caught a nasty cold and as an American, going to the doctor is the last thing you want to do with a cold because they charge you too much, 'might' give you medicine, if you are in a different city than your regular doctor they charge you even more. Don't get me wrong, I think America has some of the greatest medical tools in the world to save lives. But the health insurance is crap and so are the support services.
Since I've been in Japan, I have been to six different hospitals and clinics around the country and they took care of my problems after showing them my national health insurance card. I get the medicine I need and dont have to wait till there is a doctor that falls into my insurance plan. It ain't perfect, but it is quick, easy and reliable.

Happy New Year!!
Little Jumpers
This is a small montage of our youngest kids learning to get over their fear of heights.
English vs. Japanese #7
Where I am from in America (the Pacific Northwest), it is rare to see umbrellas as the wind will usually carry them away, so most people have sturdy rain coats that can also be used as ski gear. The storms aren't even that severe and the winds rarely knock you over. It could just be a fashion but it is practical
Here in Japan where there is an actual rainy season with massive wind and rains, an umbrella is still the standard fare for protection from the elements even though after every storm there are broken umbrellas everywhere and the evening news always has the video clip of some salary man trying to fix an inverted umbrella while being pelted with rain and wind.

Flips 'n Tricks
Here are some clips of our kids doing flips during practice. It just feels so good to fly through the air sometimes.
English vs. Japanese #5
In tune with the season, I noticed something around closing time of many stores. They play a tune before or the same time as announcing they are shutting down for the day. I believe I first noticed it during the summer a couple years back and it threw me for a loop. They play Old Lange Syne (Should old aquaintence be forgot...) and I was confused till a friend told me that was normal in the Tokyo area and that they had no idea it was a holiday song.
Though I suppose it is a fitting end to the day as it being a song that is played constantly at the end of the year.
Happy Holidays to all and see you again next year!!

This is our demonstration team practicing forms and stretching. We have a ways to go but I believe with hard work we will have a good show by next year.
English vs. Japanese #3
One of the things I have noticed since coming to Japan is the use of English in various types of media. Most people know that the Japanese have trouble with pronouncing the letter 'L' and 'R'. While this is understandable I have seen some really odd examples of this making their way into written media.
